If I buy an AIS transponder from you, why do I have to get an MMSI?
The FCC requires all AIS transponders sold to a US address to have a MMSI filed with them. If someone wants to sell you an AIS transponder system and says you don't need the MMSI "DON'T BUY IT". Sellers from outside the US don't have to get one, but for you to use it in US waters you MUST have one and the AIS can only be programmed by a dealer. Most dealers charge $100 and up to program an AIS if it wasn't puchased from them...
